Moinhos de Vento Park
Moinhos de Vento Park
The name of Parque Moinhos de Vento has its origin in the 18th century, when Antonio Martins Barbosa, coming from Minas Gerais, established himself with his windmill on the ridge where Avenida Independência is located today.
Municipal Law 2,419, which expropriates the park area for the municipality, was signed by the then mayor José Loureiro da Silva, on September 10, 1962. On November 9, 1972, Mayor Thompson Flores signed Decree 3,703, called the place of Parque Moinhos de Vento.
Today, Parque Moinhos de Vento offers leisure options such as jogging, skating, soccer, tennis, volleyball and fitness equipment. For children, there are handcrafted recreation equipment made from eucalyptus logs and a children's library.
The Park’s afforestation inventory, completed in 2018, indicates that there are 1,538 of 117 different species at the site, with the seven-leafed purple ipe (Handroanthus hepataphyllus), with 186 arboreal individuals, the species with the highest occurrence.
The park also has an Azorean mill, in the style of those that existed in the neighborhood in the early days of the city, an element that constitutes a strong tourist attraction.
